Volterra is the wilder, quieter cousin of the famous hill towns: older than Rome, ringed by Etruscan walls, sitting on a windswept ridge with views that fall away in every direction.
It has been carving alabaster for nearly three thousand years — workshops still line the lanes — and its Etruscan museum, Roman theatre and medieval piazza pack a remarkable amount of history into a town you can walk end to end in fifteen minutes.

Getting there
About an hour by car from Orentano via the FI-PI-LI to Pontedera, then the winding SR439 up — the drive itself, through the Era valley, is part of the trip.
